3.4 Soil Analysis

soil.jpg

Soil, the loose material that covers the land surfaces of Earth and supports the growth of plants. In general, soil is an unconsolidated, or loose, combination of inorganic and organic materials. The inorganic components of soil are principally the products of rocks and minerals that have been gradually broken down by weather, chemical action, and other natural processes. The organic materials are composed of debris from plants and from the decomposition of the many tiny life forms that inhabit the soil.

The site location is again at Cyberjaya, Selangor, Malaysia, on a prime, gateway, hill-top location – in the tropical area which has high temperature and also humidity. Spanning an area of about 28.94 square kilometres (7,000 acres), Cyberjaya is the nucleus of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC). It is located in the district of Sepang, Selangor and is situated about 50 km south of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. This town is known as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia.

Located in the hilly terrain with steep contour, the building was designed to respond the context of the soil. The roof of the low buildings are all extensively landscaped and form spaces for outdoor events and sport activities. In turn, the landscaping forms another thermal-shield at roof level, in response to the tropical sun-path.

In the year 2004, for several times, Jakarta achieved the Award of Cleanest and Most Beautiful City in Indonesia or called Bangun Praja Award. One of the factors is because of the spread green area inside the city. Kayu Putih, the location of the house, is one of several places in Jakarta that has wide green area and vegetation. The loose soil in this area contains humus that good for trees and plants to grow.

As already metioned, the city of Jakarta lies on a flat, low alluvial plain and is prone to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. Because of bad maintanance of city water system like clogged channel, gutter and sewage pipes, Jakarta suffers from flooding during the wet season. Related to the project we prepare for this season by anticipate the flood with design implementation. We elevate the building so that the ground floor of this house height is 80 cm above the ground level to anticipate the 50 cm floodwater height in this area. Other anticipation is good water system to provide water enter and exit the house.
