3.3 Traffic & Noise Analysis

Traffic

Plans for traffic flow and public transportation is one of the elements characteristic of city planning that urban designer have to concern about. City Planning is the unified development of cities and their environs. For most of its history, city planning dealt primarily with the regulation of land use and the physical arrangement of city structures, as guided by architectural, engineering, and land-development criteria. In the mid-20th century it broadened to include the comprehensive guidance of the physical, economic, and social environment of a community.

Noise

Noise, in physics, an acoustic, electric, or electronic signal consisting of a random mixture of wavelengths. Noise pollution is a serious environmental problem, particularly as sound levels above a certain intensity can be physically damaging. Although loud and frightening sounds are part of nature, only in recent centuries has much of the world become urban, industrial, and chronically noisy.

The projects submitted for the course assignment to be analyzed by this element:

Malaysia Design Technology Center (MDTC), Malaysia

The site location is at Cyberjaya, Selangor, Malaysia, on a prime, gateway, hill-top location – so it is in every sense a flagship project. Cyberjaya is a township that forms a key part of the Multimedia Super Corridor in Malaysia. It is located in the district of Sepang, Selangor and is situated about 50 km south of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. This town is known as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia.

The location itself is quite close with the main highway so that this building is easy to access from the other city like KL or Putrajaya. However, the noise pollution of the highway traffic does not have a big influence to the building and its surrounding because of the integrated landscaping and vegetation to reduce the level of the noise.

Anto Residence, Jakarta, Indonesia

Like many big cities in developing countries, Jakarta suffers from major urbanization problems. Because of government’s inability to provide adequate transportation for its large population, Jakarta also suffers from severe traffic jams that occur almost every day. The project is located in East part of Jakarta which is known as an industrial zone of the metropolitan agglomeration (Jabodetabek – Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi).

Because of close to the industrial zone and also bus terminal at Pulogadung in East Jakarta, the nearest main road that could access to the house is past by heavy vehicle like bus and some medium truck. However, the location is still adequate and comfort to stay from the air and noise pollution that is caused by the heavy traffic. By analyzing the location environment, we could say that because of the good landscape and vegetation at the secondary road connecting the main road and around the complex of the house, air and noise pollution can be reduced and eliminated.
