4.5 Plantation Analysis
National LandscapesSome area’s in the Netherlands have special and unique qualities and therefore are called national landscape. This means that the national government takes care for their maintenance and development. The map shows all national landscapes in Holland and the small map shows our area. You can see that our area is full of national landscapes.

Holland Water Defence line: This area 85 km long and 3 to 5 km width was a national defence line. By destructing the dikes at certain points it was possible to fl ood the land up to 40 cm in 3 weeks. This way the enemies could not reach our important cities any more by boot, or by foot! At weak spots in the defence line they built fortifications and other military defence weapons. These were all very well camoufl aged in the landscape.
Arkemheen – Eemland: This landscape is very characteristic for its openness. Because of the many fl oods in the past there are hardly any settlements. Therefore the landscape even nowadays has its original ‘landscape-pattern’. The landscape has a great variety of fl ora and fauna; this is because it used to lie on the border area between salt water and sweet water.
Veluwe: A hilly and woody area. One of the biggest national landscapes in the Netherlands.
Green Heart: Open green landscape between much urbanized landscapes.

Water Defence Line

One of the perspective goals is to maintain the identity of T’Gooi. This area is a popular living environment, we want to keep it that way and improve it. We want to protect the Water Defense Line and protect the current green in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Obviously, an natural park accomodates a multitude of kind of plantations. To symplify, we can divide the ecological corridor in 6 dominant zones : a nature reserve (Oostvaarsplassen), a recreation park for ecotourism, wetland, an ecoagriculture zone and a forested land (Hosterwold). Every zones allows to provide numerous and diversify plantations. On the one hand it is essential for ecosystems and in the other hand it is very interesting for human (for wild animals and plantation watching, for territory managment and production).
