3.7 Legends for Design

In design work legends can be used to show the atmosphere of the design proposal and how it fits in its environment. Models, sketches, sections, reference images can also be used to clarify the design and can therefore in a way also be considered as legends for design. Legend is the vocabulary of design. A legend unit is a type and any legend is a result of typology. A type is not a category, a model or a concept but the raw material for design.
The projects submitted for the course assignment to be analyzed by this element:
Malaysia Design Technology Center (MDTC), Malaysia
This is one example may relate to legend for design in the early work. These are legends for sun, traffic, noise, soil and plantation analsis.
From these legends we can state that the bio-climatic agenda focuses on controlled natural daylighting and cross-ventilation with integrated landscapping and vegetation – both on ground levels and roof terraces. The roofs of the low buildings are all extensively landscaped and form spaces for outdoor events and sport activities. In turn, the landscapping form another thermal-shield at roof level, in response to the tropical sun-path.
The location itself is quite close with the main highway so that this building is easy to access from the other city like KL or Putrajaya. However, the noise pollution of the highway traffic does not have a big influence to the building and its surrounding because of the integrated landscaping and vegetation to reduce the level of the noise.
Located in the hilly terrain with steep contour, the building was designed to respond the context of the soil. The roofs of the low buildings are all extensively landscaped and form spaces for outdoor events and sport activities. In turn, the landscapping form another thermal-shield at roof level, in response to the tropical sun-path.
